Laser micromachining
In our increasingly miniaturised world of technology, the precision machining of details in the micro and nanometre range has become crucial. Among the few physical processes capable of meeting the demands of this sophisticated technology, laser material processing stands out. It provides the capability to modify, remove, or create components at the micrometre and, in some instances, at the nanometre scale.
At the Laser Institute Rezekne (LIR), classical laser processing, encompassing laser cutting, welding, hardening, and marking, represents one of the largest and most dynamic application areas of laser technology. These processes have been entrenched in industrial applications for decades, and yet, continuous development in these areas remains a cornerstone of our research efforts.
At LIR, we are actively engaged in research that seeks to adapt these time-tested processes to the realm of high-speed laser processing. This adaptation is critical for optimally harnessing the ever-increasing power of laser technology. A prime example of this innovation is our work in laser remote cutting, where we currently achieve cutting speeds in excess of 1 m/s, and laser welds are executed at velocities up to 120 m/min.
At the Laser Institute Rezekne (LIR), we focus on the fascinating intersection of biology and laser technology, specifically in the creation of multifunctional surfaces inspired by biological models. These nature-mimicking surfaces offer ingenious solutions to a variety of technical challenges, primarily derived from their unique micro- or nanoscopic structures. Modern laser processes are exceptionally well-suited for crafting these intricate structures, which are pivotal in achieving the desired functional properties at the interface region.

At the Laser Institute Rezekne (LIR), we leverage modern computing technology to engage in the multiphysical, cross-scale modelling and simulation of laser radiation-matter interactions. This sophisticated approach plays a crucial role in deepening our understanding of laser processes, facilitating the targeted development of tailored laser systems, new material processing options, and pioneering new applications of laser radiation and laser-based measurement technology.
